Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Overview

Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, or ACRJ, is a regional adult jail at 160 Peregory Lane in Charlottesville. It is operated by the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Authority, not by the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office alone. The authority structure reflects the jail's service area: Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and Nelson County.

The jail opened in fall 1974 after Albemarle and Charlottesville chose a shared detention facility and closed older local jails. It was first known as the Albemarle-Charlottesville Joint Security Complex and became Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail in 1996. The facility now holds adult pretrial detainees, people serving local jail sentences, work release and workforce participants, weekend-time commitments, people on home electronic incarceration, and people assigned to medical, intake, classification, trustee, or special-management housing.

ACRJ Capacity and Population

The Virginia Board of Local and Regional Jails 2024 Annual Capacity Report lists ACRJ with 329 rated capacity and 662 actual capacity when double-bunking is counted. The same report lists 329 permanent beds, 303 temporary beds, 33 special-purpose beds, and FY2024 average daily population of 250.71 for July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.

Local OAR/JACC reports add trend detail. ACRJ's December 2024 total ADP was 259.51, down from December 2016 total ADP of 426.32. The December 2024 pretrial ADP was 158.97, or 61.25% of total ADP. That means the total facility population fell more sharply than the pretrial count.

ACRJ does not publish a conventional static current-inmates roster in the official source set reviewed. Its inmate locator link points to Virginia VINE. Use VINE for current custody status and notification, then contact ACRJ Records for local jail-record questions that VINE does not answer.

1. Search Virginia VINE by the person's legal name and choose Virginia when the route requires it.
2. If the VINE result is unclear, try name variants and confirm whether the person may be held under a different jurisdiction.
3. Call ACRJ Records at 434-977-6981 ext. 303 for local jail records, time-calculation questions, or release-date questions within ACRJ's limits.
4. Use the VADOC locator for state-sentenced custody, BOP for federal prison custody, and ICE ODLS for immigration detention.

ACRJ Records can answer release-date or time-calculation questions only for jail sentences of 12 months or less when there are no detainers or pending charges elsewhere. ACRJ directs one-year-or-more state-sentenced matters to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

Visiting Someone at ACRJ

The ACRJ visitation page says each inmate has the opportunity for one 30-minute in-person visit per month, with up to three visitors. Visits are first come, first served, and all visitors must be on the inmate's approved list. Visitors must dress appropriately, and inmates must be in full uniform. All people and vehicles entering jail property are subject to warrant checks, searches, video recording, and photo or video surveillance.

ACRJ Mail, Phone, Money

General mail is processed through Smart Communications Mail Processing Center. The address format is c/o inmate first and last name, ID number, c/o Mail Processing Center, PO Box 9197, Seminole, FL 33775-9197. ACRJ says to call 434-977-6981 ext. 268 for an inmate ID. Books and magazines from outside vendors are not accepted under the captured ACRJ rules.

Do not send cash, personal checks, second-party checks, payroll checks, or out-of-state checks. Do not include letters or photos in a funds envelope.

Booking and Intake at ACRJ

When an adult is committed to ACRJ, the jail creates and maintains inmate records, medical staff screen for TB, contagious respiratory illness, dental concerns, and mental-health needs, and classification case managers review current and prior charges, medical and mental-health issues, education, temperament, and criminogenic needs. That classification work helps determine where a person is housed and what programs may fit.

ACRJ's records page also explains release processing. The jail cannot release a person until actual court orders are received directly from all courts. If several courts, detainers, or pending charges are involved, release can take longer than a family member expects from the court result alone.

ACRJ Programs and Reentry

The ACRJ programming page lists evidence-based classes, GED, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, special education for eligible students age 22 and under, transitional services, religious services, chaplains, and official-document help after sentencing. Programs include Coping with Anger, Substance Abuse Matrix, Bringing Peace to Relationships, Breaking Chains of Trauma, Employment and Finance, and Moral Reconation Therapy.

ACRJ medical and mental-health services are available in person or on call 24/7/365, with a nine-bed medical holding unit. Work release lets qualified sentenced inmates remain employed while serving a sentence, and home electronic incarceration allows eligible people to remain inside a residence under monitoring instead of 24/7 jail confinement.
